297 p Summary: Eliza Caine is left alone in in the world of London in 1867 when her father dies. A trained teacher, she takes a position of governess for two children at Gaudlin Hall in Norfolk. On her way there she is almost pushed beneath a train, and following her arrival at Gaudlin Hall, a series of frightening incidents take place, each one of which threatens her life, until Eliza begins to believe that the house is haunted. But she refuses to be frightened away from her position, realising that if she is to survive Gaudlin and save the children she is looking after, then she must take on the ghost herself
