Detective Inspector John Rebus tries to tie up some loose ends before retirement, but a murder case intrudes. A dissident Russian poet has been found dead in what looks like a mugging gone wrong. At the same time a delegation of Russian businessman are in town, and everyone is determined the case should be closed quickly and clinically. Rebus is sure they are dealing with something more than a random attack. Has he taken a step too far tying up those loose ends? Will Rebus even make it to the end of his career?
