An orphaned stablehand comes across a young black boy crouching beside the local scaffold and sobbing as if his heart would break. He wonders what the strange drawings are on a scrap of paper that the boy carries in his shirt.
Far away, Abena awakes to a living nightmare. Her body is wracked with beatings, her neck sore from the leather thongs that bind her. Who are the red-faced white men and where are they taking her?
Little do the two know that the mysterious scrap of paper is destined to draw them together in a perilous bid for freedom.
