The Whanganui River at the turn of the 20th century is a busy thoroughfare. Te people who have made it 'home' are a diverse collection - Samuel Blencoe, trying to forget his past as a criminal, the nuns at Jerusalem, the Maori families, the Chinese market gardener and the farmers trying to tame the native bush. There's also Bridie, the strange, silent girl who haunts the banks of the river where the accident occured that robbed her of her mind.
